For most people, taking pictures is not a hobby but a normal part of life. On days out, special occasions and holidays we take along our cameras as a way of recording the event.
Over the next few pages, you will find tips for improving the resulting photographs. There is no technical information about cameras and lenses, no professional jargon. It is assumed that you know how your own camera works, how to load the film, and which buttons to press.
Whether you are using a compact, an SLR (single lens reflex) or a one-use disposable camera, the same basic principles apply.
All the photographs used to illustrate this chapter, as well as all the pictures used in making up the projects in the rest of the book, are just ordinary family photos, taken at home or on holiday, and nearly all were taken on a basic manual 35mm SLR camera with a 50mm lens.
