HOW TO FIX WRINKLED PAINT FINISH (WOODWORK)
HOW TO FIX WRINKLED PAINT FINISH (WOODWORK)
Description
Paint surface uneven with wrinkled uneven lines running across it.
Possible causes
• Application of a fast-drying top coat, such as gloss over a soft coating
• Too much paint has been applied.
Remedy
Make sure before painting, that the previously coated surface is hard enough to take the new gloss. When applying paint try not to apply too thick a coating.
CHECKING AND CRACKING (FINE CRACKS) AND CROCODILING (DEEP CRACKS)
Description
A series of interlacing cracks, usually all over the surface on painted woodwork.
Causes
• Differences of surface tension between coatings, resulting in movement of the adjacent coats, and shrinkage upon contraction of the top coat.
• Application of fast-drying coatings over soft backgrounds, such as coatings that have not dried thoroughly
• In some cases, excessive heat can cause checking of paint.
Remedy
It is often necessary to remove the affected paint coating by burning off or using solvent paint remover. Sometimes (but rarely) in the case of fine checking, the surface can be ‘flatted’ (rubbed down) using wet-and-dry abrasive paper or soda block, and then well rinsed.
