HOW TO FIX WET / DRY ROT IN TIMBER
WET ROT IN TIMBER
Description
Sometimes called brown rot because of the dark brown colour of the affected area.
Causes
• Dampness and prolonged soaking of the wood
• Also lack of ventilation in cold conditions.
Remedy
Cut or chop out all affected wood and an area of good wood surrounding the rot. Then use a fungicide on any nearby masonry and replace with new wood.
DRY ROT IN TIMBER
Description
The early stages of dry rot can be detected by 'cubic cracking’ along the grain of the wood and sometimes a musty pungent smell. In the later stages of dry rot there is a white furry body with silk-like strands.
Cause
• The germination of fine spores (like seeds).
Often forms where there is moisture, darkness and warmth.
Remedies
Destroy all affected timber and surrounding timber as soon as possible, and dispose of carefully.
Best advice: Call in experts immediately.
